  SLINGSHOTS

lingshots are made in highland Guatemala and Chiapas by boys and young men for use in cornfields to keep birds and rodents away, and to pass the time while tending animals on lonely hillsides. Most boys carve their own slingshots, copying favorite animals or birds in their immediate environments. Others render figures from local folklore. Slingshots show the continuing tradition of Mesoamerican wood carving.
